The 'Allegheny' name refers to the C&O locomotives job of hauling heavy coal trains up and down the Allegheny Mountains. Built between 1911 and 1949, these articulated Mallet types were very successful, with some 80 produced, initially the USRA and later the C&O H6 Class were the last loco to be built by Baldwin in the US. They typically used in pairs, hauled 100 coal cars, each 170000 pounds in weight. They were retired in 1957, 2 survived in preservation at National Railway Historical Society and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum. Total weight 450,000 pounds.
